WheelTug plc www.wheeltug.com is developing an innovative in-wheel electric taxi system that enables aircraft to taxi forward and backward using twin electric motors integrated in the nose wheels. The retrofit system is leased to airlines / operators on a savings per minute basis. WheelTug expects to offer particular savings in ground turnaround time and increased aircraft utilization. Reductions in fuel, reduced engine and brake wear, emissions, and other expenses will bring total savings to more than $1,000 per flight. The system is currently in the certification process and expected to enter service, initially for Boeing 737NG aircraft, by 2021.
