Just fascinating!!!

I have been using various types of personal finance software for over 5 years now. I have used Moneywiz, Debit&Credit, Quicken and mostly (2 years) Banktivity. All these apps are quite good at tracking expenses, creating reports and setting up budgets( not like in YNAB, YNAB's budgeting approach is completely different).

The predicament with all these apps is that they are tracking your expenses and telling you where you spent your money, but not helping you to change your spending habits. Because when you see $2,500 in your bank account, you tend to think that you have money to buy a new watch with $150. In reality, you don't have that $150 to buy a new watch, because that $150 needs to be spent on the quarterly electricity bill. YNAB is an amazing app, using envelop budgeting with the money in your bank account (not the money you are expected to earn in a month) as their primary method of money saving. Only Banktivity has this envelop budgeting like in YNAB. But the issue with Banktivity is clunky, complicated to set-up and it does not work smoothly all the time. Moreover, Banktivity does not have a proper mobile app. It works only on Mac and it is more expensive.

So I can keep going for hours... you get the picture. You should not be worried about its price because it is worth it.

We had been with My Budget for many years. It’s a service in australia where they handle your money and pay bills on your behalf working with you. But I was constantly on the phone to them still. And it costs $50pw for that service. We cancelled them and have been doing my own my budget since then with no type of app or template. It’s been a nightmare.
But I researched some apps last night and this was the third one I tried because the first two were simply not what I wanted. I only downloaded eve other apps cause it had tens of thousands of downloads. I didn’t want to budget a year out as I wanted to budget the money I had in hand each fortnight.
This app does exactly what I want. Today I got paid and instead of having to remember what to pay I looked at YNAB and literally paid everything it said I had available money to pay.
Didn’t mean for this to be a long review lol it just really is a fantastic app. I can’t link my bank accounts cause I’m outside the US but I don’t need to as it’s done manually which I like.
Only thing I’ll say is for security I wish it would ask for a pin when I open up the app. Instead of opening up to my whole budget to anyone who wants to pick up my phone and be nosey.

Best budgeting system

This isn’t just an app, but a whole philosophy of budgeting that actually works. Took a little while to understand it, but the best way to think about it is the way your Grandma might have budgeted 80 years ago. When she got paid, perhaps she took the cash and immediately put it into a set of envelopes - one marked “Groceries”, another marked “Mortgage”, another marked “Christmas presents”, another marked “Emergencies” and so on until all the money was in envelopes. That’s how YNAB works - take all the money you have and put it into envelopes. Can you spend more money than exists in one of the envelopes? Only if you take it out of another envelope. It’s a fantastic budgeting method as you quickly learn what your real priorities are and what you’re giving up if you decide to eat out instead of cooking at home. My wife and I use it together and just love it. Five stars. And the release notes after updates are a joy to read, which you can’t say of many apps!
