Morphite, a hybrid of 3D first-person adventure and shooter, looks a lot like Hello Games’ popular No Man’s Sky. Especially on first impressions, the titles do seem to share a lot in common, including the overarching science-fiction themes. But you might be surprised to learn that the team at Crescent Moon Games drew inspiration from a different iconic title.
“Morphite started out as a love letter to Metroid Prime,” says lead designer and writer Josh Presseisen. “In fact, it was more of a love letter to the Metroid that never happened on the Nintendo 64.”
“If you like exploration, I think Morphite is your game. There is plenty to find and do, be it space battles, riding in vehicles, searching in deep caves and underwater lakes, or just floating down a river on a lazy planet,” explains Presseisen. “If you are into stories and narrative, the game is fully voiced as far as the main storyline goes and I think that it has a charming personality all [of] its own.”
Morphite offers an intergalactic adventure that spans eight-plus hours and comes to life via a hilariously quirky tale across the stars. You control Myrah Kale, a spacefaring heroine on a quest for the rare, sough-after Morphite, partly so she can figure out what it actually is. As she investigates alien worlds, she’ll meet a cast of oddball characters and unravel the mysteries surrounding her foggy past.
The unique narrative is complemented by a colourful, minimalistic visual style that leans on low-polygon, flat-shaded worlds and enemies, the result of which is an experience that runs super smoothly. Couple the title’s fluid framerate with responsive, fully customisable controls – yes, there are options for auto-shooting and intuitive scanning (which feel wonderful) – and we think you’ll find plenty of reasons to boldly go where no mobile gamer has gone before.
