What is the end result of a tech-savvy community of Formula Drift enthusiasts creating a drifting game? A hyper-realistic, multiplayer game featuring real tracks and professional drivers. Torque Drift is the brainchild of Melbourne developers Grease Monkey Games, who wanted to recreate the excitement of the Formula Drift (which has also partnered with the game) experience in the mobile gaming sphere.
A big drawcard for Torque Drift is its level of customisation. First, you choose your car – a simple stock car to begin with – but as you win battles you earn currency and upgrade your parts. Want to feel the surge of a boost as you enter a corner? Invest in a turbo. Fancy tuning your car’s stance? An angle kit will help. And of course, once your rep starts to grow, you’ll want to invest in striking new livery.
The aim is to maintain high speeds while entering and turning corners, without spinning or careening into the barriers, which we did a couple of times. You’re pitted against an opponent on the track. Stick as closely to them as possible and don’t let them leave you in a cloud of very realistic-looking smoke!
The gameplay is challenging, but handy in-game tutorials give an initial steer. The driving controls are easy to use and displayed along the bottom of the screen – to play, keep a constant finger on the accelerator, use the left and right arrows to steer and tap the handbrake as you approach the corner to initiate a drift. “Once you can control your car’s tune, that’s when you can start throwing it in hard and start riding every wall you see,” says game producer Ben Lovegrove.
Formula Drift fans will love the inclusion of the 20+ professional drivers, including three female drivers, with the ability to purchase their highly recognisable cars; and with a portion of the proceeds going straight back to them. The game also regularly runs live tournaments alongside real Formula Drift events.
The attention to detail of Torque Drift is exquisite, from the sponsor branding you see trackside, to the scraping of your paint job as you repeatedly collide with your aggressive opponent. All combine to make an incredibly satisfying and realistic thrill-ride for both hardcore Formula Drift fans and newcomers to this growing sport.
