If you’ve ever found yourself overwhelmed by the sheer number of preset filters VSCO offers (a subscription unlocks over 200 gorgeous options), check out the app’s For This Photo function. It uses machine learning to analyse your image and suggest six ideal presets. It’s like getting advice from a pro – though the final decision is up to you.

Here’s how it works. Import an image into VSCO, tap Edit, and the app will automatically suggest six presets. You’ll see the recommended options for the iPhone portrait we imported in the For This Photo ribbon at the bottom of the screen.

The original image, with no preset applied.

Here’s that same image with VSCO’s suggested KE1 preset, which was modelled on Kodak Ektar 100 film. Notice how the preset bumped up the saturation and brightness, making the model stand out and the background more vibrant.

VSCO makes it easy to sample different presets: to see the before-and-after, just tap the image and hold. Once you’ve selected a preset, make more granular adjustments to settings like brightness and contrast as you please.

A more beautiful image with expert help and minimal work – what could be better?
