View

Japan has been the birthplace for many videogames that have gone on to become worldwide phenomena. Some started out as games from the beginning, while others had their origins in manga or anime.

In honour of our favourite games from Japan, we’re exploring their history, looking back on their first appearances in their home country and celebrating the characters and storylines that became so popular with players around the world.

Let’s take a look at Mario Kart Tour, a racing classic packed with plenty of surprises and new content.

Karts at the ready. The countdown starts. Tap and hold onscreen at two – and release on go. You speed down the track, zip past your competitors and grab items that can boost your performance or hinder your opponents. The excitement of the races is thrilling, and undoubtedly part of the reason for the game’s enduring popularity.

Mario, Luigi, Bowser, Peach, Yoshi and other familiar faces are here in the mobile version of the beloved racing game. Select your favourite driver and kart, then compete against players from around the world in a range of tracks, from beaches to ski resorts.

Here’s a quick look before you hit the tracks.

It’s time to take to the Tokyo streets for a scenic race.

Mario and Peach are dressed for the occasion in a traditional hakama and kimono, while driving a Quickshaw kart equipped with a Purple Oilpaper Umbrella glider.

Times Square looks dazzling.

Tear through Central Park and Times Square in the city that never sleeps! Weave through the skyscrapers of New York City in a Yellow Taxi kart driven by the snazzily dressed musician Mario or Pauline, and feel the exciting rush of a night in New York.

Fancy a race at sunset?

Put on your sunnies, we’re heading to Santa Monica with Mario and Funky Kong! Race down the beach at sunset in the new wacky Banana Master kart, or go with a baseball theme in the Pinch Hitter kart and Home-Field Glider.

Natural beauty in Vancouver

Can you spot the Northern Lights?

Vancouver offers the best of both worlds: the city and the great outdoors. Zip down a suspension bridge between giant trees, and spare a moment to admire the beautiful snowy mountains and breathtaking Northern Lights.

Art is in the air in Paris

Paris is ready to race.

For the artistically inclined, Paris is a dream destination. Peach has put on an elegant hat and Luigi is armed with a paintbrush as they race beneath the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower in the Paintster, which is shaped like a tube of paint.

Two delicious new rides are coming to Paris: the Macharon and Strawberry Crêpe. Here’s hoping that you’ll drive them to sweet victory.

Other cities include seaside Sydney, labyrinthian London and bustling Berlin. Awaiting your discovery are unique tricks and attractions in each location.
