Can music help your mental health? Cosm thinks so. It’s an ambient music app in which you create unique soundscapes that’ll take you to your happy place.
Cosm takes its inspiration from composers such as Steve Reich and Brian Eno. It offers a selection of organic sounds – rushing water, gently struck gongs, soft percussion – and generates music from them.
Swiping low gives you bass notes and high gives you treble.
The app begins with a blank canvas, responding with colours and shapes as you touch the screen. As you swipe and tap and move between different sounds, the entire piece evolves, creating something that’s utterly unique and captivating.
You can also use it with music apps if you’re feeling particularly creative. Cosm is particularly engrossing if you’re using headphones, where the music ebbs and flows from side to side.
If you like the idea of ASMR videos but all that whispering isn’t for you, then this app is. And if you do find the sounds make you sleepy, you can set a timer to wake you up, or to fade out the music to let you doze off.
