Laugh your way through the streets of Joburg
Play this hilarious beat-’em-up and resolve the love triangle.
Klapping okes is not a game
A good joke can make your day. If you like to laugh – and let’s be real, who doesn’t? – then look no further than the hilarious side-scrolling adventure fighting game Boet Fighter.
You play as Hard Eddy, a “boet” (brother) from the streets of Johannesburg. Cue the brilliant opening sequence: while Hard Eddy is investigating whether a fight in the nearby bar requires his involvement, his “fine binnet” (girlfriend) disappears from the VVVVIP (all the Vs!) section of the club where he’d left her.
Now you’ll follow Hard Eddy’s journey through Joburg’s streets, bars and rugby stadiums, in an effort to be rekindled with the love of his life.
We’ve asked Louis du Pisani, creative director at developer Cali4ways, about his inspiration for the game. “A ‘boet’ is a stereotypical ‘bro’ character: a brash alpha-male type with acute narcissism. You find boets on every block of every town in every country – BUT the South African boet is the king of them all! And the king of the boets is Hard Eddy.”

While the entertaining beat-’em-up zeroes in on a specific subculture, it always does so in a friendly and light-hearted way. Sure, Hard Eddy is an exaggerated depiction, but most of all, he’s a sympathetic hero on a relatable quest for love. And in its satire, Boet Fighter is smart enough to keep a balance: what Hard Eddy might lack in sophistication, he more than makes up for in confidence and charisma. The sheer number of funny moments are what make this game truly fantastic. And yet, there’s more: the graphics are stylish, the controls are smooth, the fighting sequences well-constructed and the plot manages to keep some aces up its sleeve. You might fire up Boet Fighter not knowing all that much about boets, but once you start playing, you’ll end up wanting to learn more.
