App used to be great, but subscription model turned me off this app

Until yesterday, Fantastical 2 was my preferred calendar app. It was a premium app with a one-time cost of about 5€ for iPhone and 10€ for iPad.

That changed yesterday when we got a surprise Fantastical 3 update that tries to force you in an insanely expensive subscription model. They ask 5,5€ per month or 44€ per year for a calendar app! No calendar app is worth that much to me.

I understand that developers can’t keep updating apps for free, and would have happily paid 5€ for the new version. I would even consider a yearly subscription for 5 or 10€. However this pricing is just insane, and I don’t know what got in the heads of the developers.

What really rubs me the wrong way is that the developers say that paid users can keep using the app as before, with no subscription necessary and even some bonus functionality thrown in.
However what this really comes down to is that the app you used to love is now riddled with icons denoting premium functions en nag screens asking you to subscribe (for example when pulling down on the month view). As you can see, a really nice bonus.

I have removed the app from all my devices and will not be coming back because my trust in the developers is completely broken. For a free option, check out the stock calendar app, it has become a lot better in the last years. For a one-time fee option, check out Calenders5.

Dishonest, disrespectful

I’ve used Fantastical very happily for years, having paid a not insubstantial sum of money for versions 1 and 2. Now I have to pay again, and repeatedly, for features I already had?! No. This is entirely disrespectful of customers who have invested in this app’s success. I appreciate the ‘buy once’ model is falling out of favour, but this seems an especially dishonest example of an app’s switch to subscription.

Can I give zero stars?

Hi everyone,

Please do pay attention and learn from Flexibits mistake.
How to kill an app in one update. NOOOOO!

Perhaps Apple is including all these features as standard and free in the next Calendar update and Flexibits wants to cash in while they can.

Change course or in one year you’ll be “a has been”.

SHAME!
