Description

The app is based on the public history project Stolpersteine by German artist Gunter Demnig as a reference and guide. Each stumbling stone - a small brass stone embedded in the cobblestones of the street - commemorates a victim from their last-known freely-chosen residence. Today, more than 70,000 memorial blocks exist in more than 1,200 cities and towns across Europe, Russia, and South America.
Although the project primarily targets the augmentation of the Stumbling Stones’ sites, it also extends its focus to other memorial sites related to the dramatic events of the Italian Resistance movement.
The first release of the app is focused on the streetscape of Venice and takes advantage of AR technology for providing access to stories and additional multimedia, taken from certified sources, for raising citizens’ awareness and promoting an active participation.
The app has been developed by Ca' Foscari University of Venice in cooperation with the Jewish Community of Venice and other institutions, and the support of the Veneto Region.
