Love’s a messy business in the quirky Spitkiss.

Spitkiss

Cute and gross love platformer

View

When Cupid’s arrow strikes, it usually leads to an exchange of saliva. For the star of Spitkiss this happens in a very literal way: within Ymer’s body are the Spitkissers, who live inside different organs, passing messages to one another via... well, the title gives the game away.

It’s up to you to guide these gooey gobs, holding your finger on the screen to control the trajectory. Spit can only travel so far, of course, so it’ll take a few arcing shots before it reaches its destination.

Finding love’s a messy business in Spitkiss.

You’ll only get another go if you hit a floating blob in mid-air or stick to a wall. Either way, you’ll need to be fast before the loogie slides off and falls. Luckily, aiming for a second time slows everything to a crawl, letting you fine-tune your shots to pass through the narrowest of gaps.

All sorts of hazards are waiting to burst your (spit) bubble. You’ll need to hit coloured walls to destroy the corresponding barrier, or bounce off springy surfaces – sometimes several times – to get the right angle of approach. Later, you’ll have to avoid enemies that flit back and forth. It’s surprisingly tricky – but then they do say the course of true love never runs smooth.

The idea might sound a little icky, but Spitkiss is actually an endearing portrait of love and all its complexities. As you complete each set of levels a cute comic book tale about polyamorous relationships emerges. It’s tougher than it looks, but it proves that love is ultimately worth the effort.
