Go on, you know you want to. Like any sweet treat, a new Candy Crush game is best devoured with aplomb – a little of what you fancy does you good, right?
Well, the freshly unwrapped Candy Crush Friends Saga is here, and has all of the candy matching this series is famed for. But now you’ve got loads of ‘helper’ characters in the mix too – ranging from a pigtailed little girl to a Yeti with moves that Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air would be proud of.
They’re all beautifully animated, and they genuinely influence how you play. At the start of each level, you can choose which chum to help you. Each one has a special move at their disposal, triggered just when things are getting tough.
“You can either choose a friend that helps you to create special candies, or one of the more specialised friends that excel at destroying blockers,” says King level designer Jesper Staafjord. “Most players will find success in the game by switching between the different types of friends to deal with different challenges.”
Every player will encounter the same three starter Friends. Mischievous little girl Tiffi can help you make bigger matches with her endless bucket of fish, excitable musician Nutcracker can use his trumpet to take out ‘blockers’ and Yeti can smash the place up with his giant snowball.
“For characters that put special candies on the board, they always try to place them in a meaningful and helpful way,” says senior level designer Pär Kamfjord. “For characters that help to destroy things on the level, they are always aiming at areas where they have the maximum output on destroying their favourite blocker.”
As you play you’ll earn new outfits for your friends, which then trigger further cute little animations. Tap them while they’re idle and you might get a fun little surprise, too.
So Candy Crush Friends Saga is a pleasingly familiar game, freshened up considerably with the addition of the charismatic Friends – plus the extra layers of strategy they bring with them.
This is the fourth Candy Crush to have arrived on the App Store, and the finest yet – a sugary sweet game you can indulge in endlessly, without upsetting your dentist.
