Healer’s Quest: Pocket Wand

No one really wants to play a supporting role in an adventure game - not when you’ve got the option to use powerful elemental magic or swing a giant sword.

But Healer’s Quest: Pocket Wand bucks the trend: this amusing adventure makes your kindly white mage the most important character of all.

As your party’s healer, you’re never in direct danger - you’ll stand at the back, behind your four bickering allies. Your job is all about choosing who to heal and when: watch their life meters as they battle, and aim your wand at those most in need by holding your finger on them.

There’s a real art to effective healing - you’ll want to keep Tanky the knight in rude health, since that’s when his attacks are most damaging. By contrast, Grumpy the Barbarian only gets his berserker rage on when his life meter is low.

In Healer’s Quest you support the battling heroes, choosing when and who to heal.

There’s skill as well as strategy involved, too. Your spells will occasionally produce large blue stars; tap the moment they make contact and you’ll get a ‘heal boost’, which lowers your wand’s heat gauge. That’s crucial, because your spells grow less effective the hotter it gets.

As you level up you’ll gain new spells, and can spend stars on increasing their potency. If one character is being targeted, give them Stone Skin to reduce damage significantly for a short time. And Remedy is essential for curing status conditions.

Healer’s Quest’s playful sense of humour is also a delight. The game will poke fun at you for not picking the hardest difficulty, while a group of bandits insist a random encounter is actually a “carefully-planned ambush”.

A few more risqué moments means it’s not suitable for kids. But as with its hand-painted look, that crudeness comes with a huge helping of charm and character, making this surprising, funny adventure worthy of your support.
