If we were to describe Galaxy on Fire 3 in one syllable words, it’d be 'whoosh wheeee zap bang swear bang woo ham'.
The ham is the voice acting, which could be sliced and covered in breadcrumbs. But ham’s half the fun of space games. The rest of the sounds are us whooshing through space blowing things up and cackling.
Galaxy on Fire 3 is every 3D space shooter you’ve ever played, and we mean that as a compliment. We’re getting echoes of Wing Commander, a dash of Elite and even a nod to Destiny’s chatty AI ghosts: if you’ve ever played a game where you blow things up in space, you’ll get a huge nostalgia hit here.
It’s not a retro game, though. The graphics are extraordinary, the controls perfectly pitched for touchscreen control, the gameplay fierce and fast. It’s so involving you’ll find yourself leaning sideways to try and corner more quickly or turning your device to try and roll faster.
There’s a story told largely in cutscenes, but all you really need to know is that there’s a bunch of increasingly tough bad guys and you need to go and blow them up with increasingly tough ships and weaponry.
Now if you’ll excuse us: whoosh whoosh zap zap zap bang!
