Candleman:find yourself

Light up the New Year

VIEW

“Why do I burn? Why am I different?” asks the adorable little candle in this game’s opening moments.

His ability to light the wick atop his head is clearly both a blessing and a curse. It also makes for a neat game mechanic; you can use your flame to both see the way forward and light up other candles dotted about the place.

The trouble is, each time you do, Candleman melts a little more. If you don’t carefully ration out your powers of illumination, it’s all over for our hero.

It all begins on a creaky old ship, one whose swaying to and fro changes the layout of the stage. Often, you’ll have to wait for the ship to tilt so that gravity helps move a platform closer or an obstacle out of the way.

There are some beautiful graphical touches in Candleman, too.

Venturing through dark, foreboding spaces, you’ll push levers and switches to progress as the game introduces environmental puzzles on top of pure platforming. The further you delve into the world of Candleman, the more you encounter larger and larger contraptions which must be tinkered with to open the next locked door.

So if you’re not pulled into Candleman through its atmosphere, puzzles or platforming, then surely the surprisingly touching story will keep you playing. Only the coldest of hearts won’t hold a candle for this neat little indie game.
