Among genealogy apps, MacFamilyTree has quite a history.
It debuted more than 20 years ago, when researching your ancestors relied more on a visit to your great-aunt than mail-in DNA analysis. Since then, the app has helped all types of genealogy sleuths document, organise and beautifully visualise their family history.
And it’s just received its biggest update ever.
Of course, all the features that have made the app a genealogical go-to remain safely in place. The app’s CloudTree function syncs your work across your devices – Mac, iPad and iPhone – and makes documenting your family a family affair: multiple people can edit info on the fly, whether they’re oceans apart or sitting across the kitchen table from each other. And because CloudTree syncs via iCloud, all of your precious details stay private and secure.
The Virtual Tree feature is similar to a traditional family tree – except this one lets you explore up to eight generations at once (in 3D, no less) by swiping, zooming and flipping in any direction. If you’d prefer to see something a little more geometric, a Fan Chart maps your family in a massive circular chart that looks more like a galaxy than greenery.
