You might hate the cold, but nothing brightens up the bleak midwinter like the thrill of competition.
Letting you play armchair skiier, Fiete Wintersports is a pacy, stylised app in which you are cast as the eponymous Fiete, an enthusiastic young sportsman (wearing an inexplicable sailor suit).
Your objective is to help Fiete to beat his friends Hinnerk and Hein, at a variety of cold weather sports. Though it’s all in good fun: every level ends with the trio, wrapped up in scarves and smiling on the podium, cheerful whatever their finishing position.
There are 14 sports to compete in, from snowboarding to curling. You play each game using different gestures: tap at just the right moment in order to launch into the perfect ski jump; tilt your phone sharply to zoom around the toboggan track; and hammer on the screen repeatedly in order to accelerate past your rivals on the speed skating track (so long, suckers).
Pitched at children aged four and over, it uses simple scoring to ensure it’s easy to follow – though the dexterity required by the different actions means it’ll appeal to big kids, too.
Triumph on the slopes this winter without leaving your armchair (or the glow of a roaring radiator).
