Description

From functions to fractals, mathematics can be used to generate an endless variety of fascinating art.

Most generative art platforms require programming or advanced mathematical knowledge and steep learning curves. We designed MathPaint to be approachable by anyone who wants to explore and create mathematical art, with no programming required.

The MathPaint document window uses familiar graphic-design controls and metaphors, such as layers with blending options, color pickers, and multi-level undo for nearly any action. Templates give you easy starting points, variations can be generated automatically, and there's even an Image Builder Wizard to help beginners create new compositions step-by-step.

At the same time, custom functions and drawing automations can be defined for deep, complex generative-art exploration. Fractals can be warped with user-defined algebraic expressions. Unusual gradient shapes can be created with scalar fields. Geometric shapes include stars of any size and winding, polycurves, and random shape creation.

The eight types of MathPaint generative models are:
• Cartesian plots
• Polar plots
• Parametric plots
• Geometric shapes including stars and polycuves
• Fractals (2D Julia and Mandelbrot, with optional warp function)
• Noise (Perlin, Voronoi, and random shapes)
• Scalar Fields
• Vector Fields

MathPaint features include:
• Dozens of built-in templates, plus user-defined templates
• Quick-reference help for any control group or model type
• Image export to .png, .jpg, .gif, .tiff, .bmp or .pdf
• Animation export as Quicktime movie (H.264), animated .gif, or collection of .png images
• Multi-layer documents, with support for different model types in the same image
• Algebraic function parsing with editable coefficients for generative functions
• Function presets for each plot type (cartesian, polar, parametric, scalar field, vector field)
• Repeated drawing automation with constant or expression-based parameter changes
• Support for over eighty Core Image effects including blurs, color, distortion, and tiling
• Sophisticated color mapping options for fractals, scalar fields, and noise
• Layer opacity blending
• Transparent-background graphics export
• Simplified Image Builder Wizard interface

Since its first release MathPaint has run natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Mac OS architectures.

We can't wait to see what you will create with MathPaint!
