Meet the creator: The NBA’s roots date back to 1946, when Walter Brown established the Basketball Association of America (BAA) after realising that his major ice hockey arenas were perfect to host basketball games. The BBA merged with the National Basketball League in 1949 and changed its name to the National Basketball Association.
