Dreamy Beak, Sleepy Blastonaut or Joyful Snout? The lovely random name generator at the start of Angry Birds Dream Blast sets the tone nicely for this gentle puzzler.

It’s as cheerful and charming as you’d expect from Angry Birds creator Rovio. It has you popping strings and clusters of brightly-coloured balls to clear the screen or meet a set of fun, diverse conditions.

It’s certainly not a mindless tap-fest, though – much of the time you’re up against an ever-diminishing number of moves rather than a ticking clock, so it’s wise to slow down and have a good scan of the grid for the biggest bunch or longest chain of balls. There are a gradually expanding set of special moves to unlock too, of course, which must be used sparingly and at the right time.

With just a few pokes of your finger you can chain together moves to clear the screen.

The titular avians play their part as well. They appear in little bubbles which, when popped, take out rows or whole areas of the screen. If you’re really clever, you’ll pop the balls separating the birds to smoosh them together into a doubly powerful bubble. And activating and chaining together these explosive special moves is really satisfying to behold, as the balls bounce excitedly about like an over-stimulated child at a birthday party.

In the world of Dream Blast, we are Shiny Dreamer, popper of balls, chainer of explosions and user of magical special powers. And our daily commute is all the better for it.
