1956 with your own eyes – travel back in time!
The House of Terror Museum in Budapest is offering the experience of time travel with their 4-5 minute videos, which cover the greatest struggle of the Hungarians for freedom in the 20th century: the 1956 Revolution and Freedom Fight. The short films were directed by György Pálfi, one of Hungary's best-known young and internationally acknowledged directors.
VIDEOS
Shooting star
Throughout the country in October 1956 the hated symbol of tyranny was being knocked down. How does it feel to remove a red star with a hammer when you are hanging from a rope in three floors height?
They Died for Us
Thousands of people died for the Hungarian freedom at the end of October 1956. In the shadow of the Soviet Armed Forces most people could only get makeshift graves where they could be buried by their comrades.
Molotov cocktail
How did the legendary girls of Pest lure the massive tanks of the Soviet Armed Forces into a trap with a simple trick? How did the attacking forces meet their fate in Budapest?
Farewell
Many young people had a difficult decision to make. To go to the basement with their families and be protected from Soviet tanks or to join their mates fighting in the streets of Budapest and become one of the legendary Lads of Pest. Many took up arms and fought for the country.
Kossuth coat of arms
After the defeat of the revolution the slightest student prank was seen as political resistance. To play a trick on a communist headmaster was regarded a rather brave action. The communists banned, but the freedom fighters started using the 1848 coats of arms.
Interrogation
How was the interrogation of the arrested freedom fighters carried out deep in the prison cells? And how does it feel when it is you who is being interrogated?
Our Street
Revolutionaries watch over the public order and safety of their streets. When the Revolution is just about to succeed a baker's errand boy is walking the streets of Pest; he is followed by a Soviet patrol.
Malfunction
On 23rd October the radio reported the student demonstration and the workers immediately joined. Even against the will of the foreman loyal to the regime. A song sung in a different way.
War and Love
Young people are scrubbing the cobblestones. The Soviet Occupying Forces had no idea what a dangerous weapon soap could possibly be. The slippery cobbles of the narrow alley prove to be a death-trap.
