Every stellar idea starts with a sketch. Autodesk SketchBook is filled with useful drawing tools that support everything from casual musings to professional multilayered illustrations. Open the app and you’re not only presented with a clean canvas, but also a huge assortment of heavy-duty drawing tools.
The main menu sits at the top of the screen from where you can tweak different aspects of your creation and, say, add perspective guides or text, and even record a time-lapse video. On the left-hand side of the screen you’ll find the drawing tool library; it’s a bountiful resource, with everything from basic pencils and fountain pens, to synthetic paintbrushes and dusty airbrushes. Make your selection, then finely tune the thickness, pressure, nib hardness and more under Settings.
Take a picture of a drawing on paper with your iPhone or iPad, and you can then import it to SketchBook as a line drawing with a transparent background, ready for your magic touch. Another nifty resource, much-adored by illustrators, is the app’s library of Copic colours.
To support a seamless and efficient workflow once you start sketching, in each of the four corners of the screen it’s possible to assign a function shortcut. For example, double-tapping the top-left corner clears a layer, while double-tapping the bottom-right corner performs a redo – you can customise these shortcuts under the app’s Preferences section.
While you’re there, you can also enable the 3-finger Swipe Menu, which means you can quickly swipe up on your canvas to display the Color Wheel and swipe down to display the Brush Library.
Using an iPad and Apple Pencil, the app senses the degree of pressure and tilt to support more detailed expression on your canvas. And because inspiration can come knocking anywhere, anytime, your drawings can be synchronised between your iPhone, iPad and Mac – making it convenient to sketch a draft on your iPhone and complete it on a larger screen later on.
With everything you could need packed into one neat, fuss-free space – where every tool is close to hand, but equally easy to hide when you want to work distraction-free – SketchBook understands the art of subtly supporting limitless creativity.
