asensei guides and monitors your practice on and off your rowing machine. More than a workout, this is a series of lessons - build strength and fitness alongside skill and technique as you are guided, monitored and corrected through these programs by your very own personal coach, asensei.

asensei talks to the monitor on your rowing machine, reads force curves, analyzes your performance and uses that to inform your practice. Are you losing power at higher stroke rates? Are you losing length when you’re tired? Do you find it hard to hold lower stroke rates consistently? Are you rushing the recovery? Compensating for poor leg drive with over-use of your arms?

We connect to the Health app to monitor heart rate on some workouts.

What’s New

Version 1.20.0

We say sayonara, or farewell, to the Hey asensei [+] button in this update. Some of you loved it, some of you hated it, and some of you never even figured out it was there! You can now find the main menu for asensei in the top right of the Up Next screen - we think this is more intuitive and works better in both portrait and landscape mode.

If you are looking for your Workout History that's now located under the menu item JOURNAL. We chose the name Journal because we want to bring you much more here in future - more post-workout stats and insights - watch this space! For now you'll find the usual list of workouts you have performed and can still tap into them to see more performance insights. Your programs and workouts can be found via the PROGRAMS menu item and settings are in the MY ASENSEI area. SUPPORT is located at the foot of the new menu.

We're planning further enhancements to the asensei rowing user experience in the coming months - it's all aimed at making asensei more enjoyable to use. Tell us what you like, don't like and would like us to improve via!


A bug that meant music (our default option) would not play correctly on iOS17 has been addressed.


Up Next screen menu changes:
* The menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top right replaces the Hey asensei [+] button in the bottom left.
* The JOURNAL menu item replaces the Workout History button (more insights will be added to this section over time).

Up Next screen visual refresh:
* Exercise name, coach name and program name now in cyan.

Awesome, get the most out of your Concept 2

Before getting this app I was rowing my C2 aimlessly, poor technique, no goals, no coaching. I tried the free trial workouts that comes with the download. After 1 week I was hooked. The app connects easily with the C2 pm5, once connected, the app allows you to download a selection of free workouts, many more available with the paid subscription. A few things really impressed me. First, connectivity with the C2 is excellent and the app allows you to upload your workout and stats to your C2 logbook. Second, the app provides the rower with a human connection. Instead of relying on graphics, you actually get to see a real rower on his C2 doing the same workout that you’re doing. For me that was what got me hooked. I actually got to see what I was doing wrong, and by listening to the coach and copying his movements I was able to dramatically improve my rowing technique. Third, unlike other rowing app, this one records your performance as you progress and provides you with target goals based on you specifically. Lastly, the customer service is excellent. When I purchased my subscription I must have done something wrong and my subscription didn’t download to my app. I wrote a brief email and the next morning everything had been sorted out. Like all app, you need to read the FAQ provided by the developer, in this case, the FAQ is extensive and covers about everything. I’m not into sharing workouts and stats with others, but if it’s your thing the app also provide that possibility. Although I have not tried it, there is an online presence on Facebook and also some live workouts. I strongly encourage you to give this app a try.

Great App

I have been indoor rowing for over four years and have been looking for an app like this for a while. It has personalized workouts that help to push you to get better. So far I have done five of Eric’s workouts and they have been great. Almost like going to the gym and having a class. I like that each one is different and builds on previous ones. There are always reminders about technique and if you slow down or speed up too much it lets you know. The app connects easily to my PM5 and it also uploads to the Concept 2 website. I throw the workout to my TV so I have a great view of the coach. For the price I think the app is excellent.

Overall good guide for training

Just got feedback from Asensai. I am very pleased that what I had posted on my comment was taken into consideration (probably many more reviews included these comments). If they pull through with the features I will update to 5 stars.

I’m new to rowing and just bought a concept 2 with a PM5. Very easy to set up, application is very easy to follow.

Did the 6 week program with Eric and had fun. Workout plan is well guided and I did improve very much.

Very happy with the program.

Future recommendations:
-Allow user to move the time bar to skip certain parts of the training (ie the warm up comes repetitive).
-allow for choice of music or allow Spotify or Sirius XM to play in background.
-hopefully add more programs for training.

Update to latest version of app; you can now skip many parts of a workout including titles, warmups and rests. We don’t let you skip the hard work though!

If you visit you’ll see over 40 new lessons from Shane Farmer of Dark Horse Rowing. Eric Murray is working on new programs with as we speak and we will be releasing some new workouts from Coach JQ!

Music — we’re collecting customer preferences from Spotify, Pandora, Apple Music and/or local music on your iPhone to prioritize what we do next!
