Have to log in now

It was a great app and I used it to keep track of deadlines. For some reason they’ve decided that you have to log in with Apple, Google, Facebook etc to use it.
I’ll have to find a different one now I guess.

Developer Response ,

Hi there,

Thank you for using DayCount! When you 'Sign in with Apple,' you have the option to keep your email hidden. Additionally, creating an account unlocks features such as syncing across devices and backups, enhancing your overall experience.

We recently made signing in mandatory to simplify the process, as some users encountered difficulties when creating an account after using DayCount without one.

We definitely do not, and will not, sell your email address. Or ever sell any of your personal information.

Should you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to reach out to us at hello@zaminiti.com.

Not good you have to pay

I downloaded this and as soon as I got in you have to pay money or you can’t use the app. Why don’t apps just put the money rate there instead of free because it’s not free...7 days then you have to pay. No thanks. But good for people who can afford these apps...I can’t. ♥️

Scam

This is the worst scam! You download the app, have to sign up ( give them your email address) then it turns out you have to pay for!

Developer Response ,

Hi,

I personally want to thank you for taking the time to write your review, and also, for giving me the opportunity to explain why DayCount is not entirely a ‘free’ app.

Basically, most apps tend to have a business model so they can cover costs and make a profit, whilst at the same time, build something useful and beneficial. A common business model is advertising, where your time and attention are sold to advertisers who pay to show their product to you. An app that uses this model can seem ‘free’, however, this usually refers exclusively to using it without paying for it, which sounds pretty good, until you become aware that there is probably something else you are exchanging instead of money.

There’s a quote, ‘if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product’, from ‘The Social Dilemma’, a documentary on Netflix which I’d recommend watching if you’re interested in learning more about how ‘free’ services, apps and platforms work. To keep this as short as I can, for these things to be ‘free’, they need to attract your attention and time on their platform as much as possible, so they can collect information about you (what you like, what you don’t like, age, gender, etc.), which can be sold to whoever wants to influence you in some way (eg. to buy what they are selling). In a way, you are the product in this scenario, which is why you are not ‘paying’.

This isn’t necessarily a negative thing. But why I am not a big fan of this business model is particularly because for it to work successfully, the app should be designed to encourage someone to use it as much as possible, which usually means focussing on making certain design choices that attempt to increase how ‘addictive’ something is. And I can’t justify doing that, because, your time is precious, and I don’t want to be in the business of selling your time and attention to others.

I prefer that you use DayCount on your own terms. Specifically, I’d rather you use DayCount when you need to, and only for as long as necessary to do what you need to do (which, on average, is about 1-2 minutes daily). I don’t wish to sell your time, attention, and information to others, because I would so much rather that you spend your time on better things, in real life than encouraging you to look longer at your screen, hoping that multiple ads catch your eye, whilst using DayCount.

Because of this, DayCount is the product, and you are a customer (if you wish to be). There is a free part of DayCount that is available for you, with feature limitations, which the majority of people use. And, there is the option to use the complete app, through a subscription or a one time purchase. I just want to be transparent in saying that the free part produces $0 in revenue. And because of this, DayCount’s business model depends entirely on people who purchase the complete app. On the flip side, more revenue could be made if we chose to be more ‘free’, but that would mean making choices in a way that I wouldn’t like to make, just so that you are encouraged to use DayCount for longer than you actually need.

I hope this helps you understand why DayCount has a price and isn’t ‘free’. I also hope that you don’t think my response is crazy long, it’s just that I think you deserve to know about this so that you can make informed decisions on what you choose to use.

Harry.
