Your Apple Watch tracks sleep stages, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), blood oxygen, ECG, temperature, and more—but what does all that data mean? More importantly, what do you actually do to get more shut eye?

Empirical Sleep distills your Apple Watch health data into one simple sleep score, then suggests actions to help you improve your sleep duration, onset, and quality. Unlike other free sleep trackers for Apple Watch, we're focused not just on more data, but helping you actually sleep better and get more shuteye.


** Sleep score **
Our sleep score auto combines everything into one simple number, including the percentage of time you spend in REM sleep, deep sleep, your heart rate, HRV, and oxygen during sleep, your sleep duration, and how long it took you to fall asleep.

On the checkup screen, you can monitor your health stats against other users of Empirical Sleep and medical norms to understand where you're above, below, and right around the average.


** Take action to improve your sleep **
The goal of all this health monitoring isn't just tracking—it's to act and get better shuteye. The challenges tab suggests simple daily actions you can take to improve your sleep. After 7 days, it will show a log of whether that action actually worked for you.


** Monitor your risk of sleep apnea **
1 in 8 adults have sleep apnea. What's more, 80% of people with sleep apnea don't realize they have it. On the checkup screen, assess your risk of sleep apnea using a medically-validated questionnaire. If you're at medium or high risk, you can chat directly with a real medical doctor to discuss next steps (available in select US states).


** Native Apple Watch app **
View your sleep duration, onset, quality, and stages (REM/deep/core/awake) directly on your watch using our native Apple Watch sleep app.


** Watch face & iPhone lock screen widgets **
Display your sleep stages, sleep duration, onset, and quality directly on your watch face or your iPhone's lock screen, using the new widgets introduced in iOS 16 and watchOS 9.


** Compatible, integrated with health, and free with an optional subscription **
Empirical Sleep is compatible with Apple Watch Series 3 and above. It integrates with the Health app to auto track your sleep segments, heart rate, HRV, blood oxygen (SpO2), steps, sleep stages, and activity. Empirical Sleep is a free app to download, with an optional paid subscription.

Good idea, but wildly inaccurate

Reported issues but no response from company. I like the idea, but with no support and wildly inaccurate reports I’m deleting the program. Example “You went to bed at 10:35pm, you fell asleep at 10:35pm, and awoke at 12:06am.” “You slept for 10h 03m”. Really?
