Quickly and easily plan your trip from home to work, a restaurant or the theatre or from Schiphol to your hotel or B&B. Check whether there is a diversion or delay on your route. You always have your favourite line’s up-to-date departure times at your fingertips. And now it’s also possible to purchase a barcode ticket for immediate travel.

What the GVB travel app offers you:

- Trip planner: plan your trip to any address in Amsterdam or the rest of the Netherlands.
- Alert for disruptions: turn notifications on for your favourite line(s). You will receive an Alert if there’s a diversion or disruption. You can set this for certain days and time periods.
- Crowd indicator: in each requested travel advice, you can immediately see how busy a service is expected to be.
- Bicycle as before and after transport: under travel preferences, you can easily indicate whether you will start or end your trip by bicycle.

- Save favourites: save your favourite locations in Amsterdam with just one click. It’ll then be even easier to plan your next trip.
- In-app ticket purchase: you can buy tickets via the app for one hour or for more hours/days and activate them immediately so you are ready to travel. Easily check in and out using your mobile.

Why are travellers using the GVB app even more?

Does the bare minimum but trash design

The app does it’s job by allowing you to purchase tickets that are actually 24 hours from when you activate it rather than other cities with their “24 hour” tickets ending at 6:00 am. That’s the only positive thing.

When I try to tap in and out of buses, trams, train stations, the reader has so much trouble reading the barcode. Even at 30 cm away, the reader triggers the wallet on the iPhone covering the displayed barcode. And when it doesn’t, it doesn’t read it. On many occasions I’ve needed to have someone who’s working at the train station to let me and my partner past the turn style. Not to mention, we’ve missed multiple trains struggling to get into stations for 5-10 minutes at a time.

The developers of this app need to allow for the ticket to be registered to the wallet app to avoid this as well as make your readers better.

Departures

With the old app you could check the route of every line by going to departures and then clicking the different in search the lines would show up. Just choose a tram , metro or bus line and the route appears. Where is that option now?

Developer Response ,

Update: the departure times are now also available from the overview of the line numbers. On top of that you can save a planned trip!
Dear traveller,
It is unfortunate that you had to miss the function of the current timetable of lines in the new app. We are happy to inform you that this function is back and that you can now see the current departure times of all stops on the route of your line.
We continue to develop the app and take all feedback we receive on the app very seriously. We would therefore like to thank you for your feedback and hope that you will appreciate the app more.

Best regards,
Robin

Buyer Beware

I reviewed online the ticket I wanted to purchase and it was suggested to download the app to acquire them this way. I did so. I selected the 96 hour ticket I wanted and it wasn’t until the payment was confirmed that it popped up saying the latest activation date, which was 3 days before I arrive. There should be a pop up during the purchase confirming the tickets type and activation date before the purchase is final. No help from this company at all as “ it is my responsibility to know about the 30 day activation date”. This should be made easier to see within the app. No refund despite the fact these tickets cannot be used. Welcome to Amsterdam!
