Habitica is a free habit-building and productivity app that uses retro RPG elements to gamify your tasks and goals.
Use Habitica to help with ADHD, self care, New Year’s resolutions, household chores, work tasks, creative projects, fitness goals, back-to-school routines, and more!

How it works:
Create an avatar then add tasks, chores, or goals you’d like to work on. When you do something in real life, check it off in the app and receive gold, experience, and items that can be used in-game!

Clean interface but lack of updates

I've loved using this app for years and years, and it genuinely helped motivate me to start healthy habits for the better. It's simple but effective, has a clean interface, and the separate tabs for habits/daily tasks/one-off to-dos is so much easier to navigate than other apps that throw them all together in one list. The paid gems & premium subscriptions are pretty reasonable too - free players get full functionality and paid players can buy quests for extra cosmetics or host challenges.

On the downside, the app's had few content updates and once you run out of free quests there's not much left to work towards besides those monetized cosmetics. The community aspect has also wound down - with staff alienating the volunteer mods in a messy situation - so the guilds and chatrooms were shut down too. I learned so much from the supportive communities there, so that social aspect is sorely missed.

TLDR: Good app that could use content updates and a reinvigorated social scene.

Going downhill

I’ve been using Habit off and on since 2014. Its premise is great - get stuff done and meet other people along the way to help motivate you. However, the people in charge now are not the ones who built the app and site. Habit was built by volunteers, but bizarrely, those volunteers have all been shown the door, and now Habit is ending features that got me invested in the app. Two main social hubs, the Tavern and guilds, are being shuttered on August 8th, and with them go two great ways of meeting other people. The app still has a Looking for Group feature, and the Tavern and some of the guilds have migrated to unofficial Discords, but this shutdown of social spaces is not a good sign of things to come.

Best features removed

I’ve loved using this app on and off for 8 years now, but it sucks to see it’s most unique features - guilds and taverns - removed. They created community and a sense of cheering each other on to complete things. Now, it’s just another task list with rpg leveling. I hope they bring these features back.
