What’s New

Version 6.1

Check out the updated CREATE!
- The drawing tool UI now features a vertical list of lines and brushes that can be expended and collapsed
- Set any line or brush as the default line type that will be used when the drawing tool is opened. To set the default line type: open the drawing tool, tap on the line type button (the squiggle icon in the top left corner of the drawing tool); then tap on the settings icon (on the right side above the Photos button); tap the checkbox next to the line that should be the new default line
- Within the the new drawing tool settings, you can now hide lines from the list by tapping the ‘x’ button next to a line; tap the ‘x’ button again to unhide.
- A new pressure sensitive brush tool has been added to the drawing tool. If you want to use CREATE mostly for freehand drawing, set this brush as the default line type. More brushes will be added soon
- A second ‘Save color’ button is now displayed within the color picker when you attempt to save the color of an object that uses different colors for its stroke and fill. You can save each of these colors independently. To save a color: add an object on the canvas; apply a custom color; tap the colors icon (above the Photos in the bottom toolbar) to open the color picker; then tap the elipsis (3 dots) on the right side to open the save color tool; the save color buttons are located at the top of the left column.

Some fixed bugs:
- Fixed an issue importing a json file (editable .create file) from the Files app, if the file is unsynced to the current device, CREATE might previously get stuck fetching from iCloud
- Fixed an issue when setting and resetting the default canvas size
- Fixed an issue when dragging the cursor to select multiple words within a text box that contains multiple rows of text, the text box now remains stationary
- the auto-suggested text row is only displayed when a CJK keyboard is selected; you can override this in the device settings

Lots of other minor UI edits:
- There’s an updated order of the list of settings in the side menu
- A new icon is used to delete a layer in the right side menu
- There’s a fade effect at the bottom of the canvas size picker
- There are many other edits and tweaks throughout the app

Amazing app!

There is a learning curve with Create but the in-app instructions have been super helpful. With continuous use, the app is quite easy to use. You are able to play with many of the features without buying anything, but I was happy to make the 10 dollar purchase to support the creaters and team. I love this app! The interface is great and simple. There's thoughtful features I haven't seen in many apps which truly makes it shine: (It's beyond me to explain them in a technical way that makes sense but I'll try) you can group layers together easily, save components for next time, create your own colour palettes, and the finger gestures and buttons around the corners the image/shape I find very efficient.

I would love to see a colour dropper in future updates if possible!

Thank you!

Developer Response ,

Thanks for that thoughtful review!
We still have some improvements to make on the grouping feature. We also plan to enable the export of component as pngs with customizable size.

Regarding the colour dropper, we thought about this but as there are already a lot of features packed into the colour tool, it seemed like it might be overload, and also seldom used.
How do you think that you would use a dropper... to extract a color from a photo?
If you just wish to reuse the color from one layer, you can just select and save it, then apply to another layer. Or is that too many steps?

Thanks again, and we’d love to hear about other areas that you feel could be improved.

Perfect!

Tried and used several other graphic design apps (including one requiring subscription) that I thought were great or at least decent, until create immediately showed me that they were all garbage.

Pass on this.

Let me restate. The UI provides a nightmarish experience even for someone who has experience with other ‘sophisticated’ pieces of software. You assume that I am a new user. I am not.

Common functionality requires relearning a piece of software that, as far as I can tell, offers NO benefit beyond that offered by other software or apps in it’s genre.

The very first line in your app description claims that it is the most powerful and easy to use app. It also claims to offer the power of desktop design tools. I don’t feel that either of those statements are even close to being true and I feel misled.

Your UI is horribly inefficient in my opinion.

Developer seems more interested in defending poor design decisions rather than taking criticism to offer a better product.
Sorry if you got offended, but your app does need some work.
A successful developer would take value from criticism rather than getting defensive.

I already have Affinity Designer. Create comes nowhere to being a contender in terms of functionality and ease of use.
If you’re trying to compete, you do have a ways to go.

Comparing your app to PSD is definitely premature.

Developer Response ,

I see from your reply that you are using CREATE on the iPad, where there are indeed many excellent design tools available. CREATE is primarily used on the iPhone where I do not believe there is an Affinity product. The fact that Affinity did not just scale down their product to fit on the smaller screen tells you something, that the normal desktop/iPad pallets and menus do not work efficiently on the iPhone. That is why CREATE had to develop new UX patterns to make it useful. There are a few other sophisticated design apps for the iPhone but they tend to be difficult to use, meanwhile CREATE offers the most tools with the most effective UX on this screen size. But yes you need to spend a minimal amount of time to learn how the more complex features work. The main features are quite simple:

Tap the ‘+’ button in the bottom toolbar, then add: shapes, text, lines, photos to the canvas.
Single tap on an object to select
Double tap to edit
Long press to duplicate or group

I was not offended and I think my original message (below) does not convey this. Meanwhile by calling something 'horrible' and 'nightmarish' it seems that your intention was not to be constructive, but instead to trash something that you were unwilling to spend the time to learn how to use. BTW I didn't compare the app to PSD, I just gave an example of another app that requires learning. If you have the time to try CREATE on an iPhone and compare to other similar apps, I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Original developer response:
By ‘intuitive’ you mean that you want to instantly understand all the features and how they work. Is that how it is in all your apps... PSD?

Sophisticated apps with lots of features often require some learning. CREATE has a comprehensive help section for this purpose.

There is a price to intuitiveness... making something simple and obvious to the new user often means that it becomes inefficient and cluttered for experienced users.

Many experienced users of CREATE will tell you that it becomes extremely natural to use. I suspect that the issue you are having with the UI is unfamiliarity — we do need to do a better job at onboarding and explaining. This is something the we continue to work on.
