Exploiting open source

This app seems a lot like a program that is freely available for Linux, but don’t assume that it’s just the same. This is not some altruistic open source app.

I was really annoyed when I read their privacy agreement. While the app provides you with access to all those great fonts, Hemism LLC gets access to data from your phone, which is described in the vaguest of terms.

In terms of actual app function, it seems to work well. I find it deceptive because the user thinks they are getting one thing (some nice fonts which Hemism just scraped off the web, or more likely the app just downloads directly from the original source), but the developer is taking information from you without really saying what that info is or who’s getting it or what will be done with it. Why should I trust them?

And don’t tell me they got permission. You know and I know and more importantly Hemism knows that no one reads or understands the license agreement. I’d say that they depend on this fact.
