Planning Via Francegina with App

Sometimes difficult to follow a specific path (eg Via Francegina) when planning daily stages, but overall good.

Forced from ViewRanger

I am one of the many being forced over by ViewRanger, my friends and I all use this app for hiking and tracking locations. I was hopeful at first but after switching over I quickly realized how limited and inferior the app was compared to ViewRanger. My standard map was Open Cycle Map and often used several different maps to compare areas, being limited to only open street map, the app is functionally useless to me for hiking. As well as not being able to save offline areas without the subscription I quickly realized I would need to pay just to be able to test out the functionality of the app in the back country. After trying the app I decided to switch over to Gaia which was able to import all of my tracks and POI and has far better usability for my needs. It’s a shame as my entire hiking community loved ViewRanger and many had paid for maps but have now switch to Gaia as well.

Developer Response ,

Hi there. We are sorry to hear you have not been happy using our app. The free subscription is more limited, but our prices for Pro and Pro+ are market comparative. For topo maps and saving offline, you would need a Pro subscription - we believe this would enhance your experience and allow you to benefit from many more features and functionality. If we can help you with anything at all, do not hesitate to get in touch with us at service@outdooractive.com.

Thanks for the review,

The Outdooractive team.

Switching from ViewRanger, very poor

I’m finally switching over to this app from ViewRanger, because they “merged “and they’re shutting down ViewRanger and forcing us over to this app.

The switchover process didn’t go so smoothly, constantly telling me to connect to ViewRanger when I had done that successfully immediately before, and after repeating that cycle three times it finally worked. It transferred my data over successfully including tracks and maps.

Problem is, with Maps I actually paid for (as opposed to the free included ones) in ViewRanger, those maps do not work properly in this app. One map, a Canada map, either blanks out many regions, or in the regions it shows, won’t zoom in beyond a far away distance and then it just goes blank. The other map won’t zoom to show anything whatsoever. The bottom line being the maps I specifically paid for and wanted and loved in ViewRanger, do you not work in this app.

Unlike ViewRanger, this app only gives you the open street map, so I have also lost the other standard maps that were included in the Ranger which I mainly use. To make things even worse, this app won’t even let you view satellite view in the most basic open street map, unless you pay a very high price subscription fee. So again this app is very disappointing. I also find the features extremely limited in this app compared to ViewRanger. ViewRanger was definitely superior. But it seems we have no choice as, if I understand correctly, they are shutting ViewRanger down and forcing everyone over to this app. Very unfortunate. Hopefully they will take the many wonderful things in ViewRanger and incorporate them in this app but I’m not hopeful. I think it’s time for me to look for A different app. The in-line advertising in this app is also pretty pushy and invasive, appearing inline with data, so far more forced advertising that most apps that include advertising.

I appreciate that the goal of the Outdooractive company is to make money, but ViewRanger was far superior in pretty much every way, and the Outdooractive app is not an upgrade as far as what it offers and how it works, in my opinion. I’ll use ViewRanger as long as possible, then search for another different app.
