Your Own Personal Cookbook

By a wide margin, this is my favourite app. It’s the equivalent of writing your own cookbook with all your favourite recipes included and indexed in any way that makes sense to you. I’ve created categories for non-food items too, such as DIY body care items, suet for birds and natural insect repellent. I'm thrilled this version now allows photos so you can create a visual reference to techniques you don’t often use. Hindsight has consistently perfected and incorporated new features that users have asked for. It may take until the next update or even two, but they listen and try to make their app better with features the users want to have. I am a big fan.

Very disappointing

I had hoped to find a recipe management software that could easily convert units from imperial to metric which this software does, as do many online programs for free. However, I was also hoping to find software which could modify the quantity/serving sizes. Unfortunately, despite it’s very positive reviews, this program does not do this well. For example, increasing the serving size from 1 tablespoon x 5 simply becomes 5 tablespoons - there is no intuitive capacity for the software to convert this to a more suitable measure- which in this case would be 1/3 cup. One pinch of salt becomes “5 pinches of salt”. Overall, this is not helpful to me.

My second concern is that entering nutritional information is very laborious - you are required to type out each category. I think this could be much more managable if a template for the typical grocery store label was provided and could be completed as part of the recipe.

The settings are very limited in their ability to make modifications (even to set your default measuring unit to print!). Even though I set the recipe to be in metric units, it prints with the imperial units. The online manual is simplistic and very basic which is a reflection on the simplistic software.

Overall, not a useful app to me. I will continue my search. I have wasted my money.

Developers: Please consider...

I love this app so much. I've purchased both versions for MacOS and both for iOS, and don't regret supporting a developer that puts the kind of care into their product that these guys do. There are enough 5-star reviews here, I won't get into all the great things that Paprika will do for you.

To the developers: PLEASE consider incorporating the use of tags *as well as* folders. If you're the type who likes to organize your recipes into different categories and sub-categories, and only have folders to work with... well, it can make for a LOT of folders. Imagine throwing ALL of your appies into a single "Appetizers" folder, then assigning appropriate tags to organize further; i.e. vegan, dips, Mexican, sweet/salty, etc. I'm willing to bet that there are many folks who use your product who would love that. (Ugh. I have SO many folders...)

Please also consider: Currently, when ingredients are listed by volume OR weight, batching or reducing the recipe via the 'Scale' feature works brilliantly. However, when ingredients are listed by volume AND weight... not so much. Whatever's listed first gets scaled, while the second remains as it was originally entered. Many folks prefer to bake by weight, but we still like to see the volume as well... if the 'Scale' feature could somehow be applied to both, that'd make Paprika an 11-star app in my mind ;)
