What’s New

Version 6.4.1

Apple Pencil users with lots of notes will love the Shelf's new Grid mode - now, you can organize more notebooks at once.

(This minor update lets you 'favorite' color palettes for easy access across tools, and fixes a display bug when copying notebook pages.)

Editors' Notes

Sure, the handwriting experience in Penbook is best-in-class. And yes, we love how Live Paper puts our Calendar events in an agenda alongside our sketches and scribbles. But what really keeps us coming back is how the app obsesses over customization, from paper and pen types to templates that have completely changed the way we take notes.

Penbook has made everything else irrelevant

With the addition of OCR text support, Penbook is stepping into the top tier of iPad note taking apps to use with a Pencil -after- adding a huge library of ready to go templates for organization styles you didn’t think you needed. The templating system is one of the most forward thinking out there. Many different types, with many customization options. Even if they didn’t add any more to the app, I would be able to functionally use all of these for years to come, but I would love to see more of what the art department has for ideas. The emulation of a pen/pencil/highlighter is one of the driving factors behind this app for me, but the way it is implemented is just as much, if not more important. Changing opacity at the same time as the tip size is a nice combination of things to have. Colour swatches, pen type and size are an Apple Pencil double tap away, and a menu option will have it smartly disappear to leave you with a document that is fitted to your iPad to function as a piece of paper. It’s great for meetings, homework, bullet journaling. I use Penbook for everything Pencil related now. It’s therapy, it’s university study and it’s planning a brighter week. Thank you to User Camp for making this. If I had to request features, I’d say making the typed note text align with whatever dot, grid or line layout in the template I choose would bring me so much zen. Also a few more tip size variations being a toggle in settings would add a lot more control. Oh, and a layer system like in Procreate. More variations of the ‘Gerrymander’ and ‘Please fold along this line’ templates would just melt my butter.
