Scan a page, photo or PDF and hear it read aloud, word by word, even without internet. Your pages stay on your phone. Plus 640+ AI tools to search and try.
Point your camera at a page and listen. Read Aloud For Me reads printed text aloud: books, letters, worksheets, menus, PDFs and screenshots. It works without internet, and your pages never leave your phone.
READ ALOUD, ON YOUR DEVICE
- Scan pages with the document camera, choose a photo or screenshot, open a PDF or text file, or paste text.
- Each word is highlighted as it is spoken, and the text scrolls along, so you can follow.
- Tap any paragraph to start from there. Skip forward or back a paragraph.
- Choose the speed, from slow to twice as fast.
- Keeps reading with the screen locked, with play and pause on the lock screen and your headphones.
- Detects the language and picks a matching voice. Sounds best with Apple's free Premium voices: the app shows you how to download them in Settings.
- Scanned PDFs are recognised too, not just PDFs that already contain text.
- Everything you read is saved in Recent, so you can listen again later.
TRANSLATE AND SUMMARIZE
- Translate a text into another language with Apple's built-in translation (iOS 17.4 or later; works offline once the language is downloaded).
- On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, get a short summary of a long text and listen to it.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Text recognition, speech, translation and summaries run on your iPhone. No account. Your pages are not uploaded and not stored anywhere but on your device.
WHO IT HELPS
People with dyslexia or low vision, language learners, students with long readings, and anyone who would rather listen than read.
A CATALOG OF 640+ AI TOOLS
The second tab is a searchable catalog of more than 640 AI tools in over 100 categories, with free and open-source tools flagged. Tools marked Test Inline open in a panel inside the app.
FREE, WITH ADS

The tools in the catalog are made and run by their own developers; their names and trademarks belong to their owners.
FOR SCHOOLS
Using Read Aloud For Me in a classroom? Read Aloud For Me PRO has the same reader with no ads, so it suits students and shared devices. Schools can buy PRO through Apple School Manager with a 50% education discount on 20 or more copies.
