Description

Russian Front is our most ambitious strategy game yet, an operational-level game with a wider scope than any of our previous titles. The battle for the Russian Front was a pivotal moment in World War 2, and this game gives it the scale it deserves.

"The interface is just so clean, intuitive and functional that I was able to get past the learning curve in no time at all, and get right down to the business of developing tactics to beat the game." - Mark D., Grognard.com

"Passed Inspection: Low price, Good AI, good depth of play" - Armchair General (Review score: 91%)

Experience grand strategy across the entire theatre of the Eastern Front; the military conflict that many consider to be the iconic attacker/defender scenario. Command massive armies at your fingertips, in this fully 3D turn-based simulation of one of the largest military campaigns in history, playable as both Germans and Russians.

Start in the early days of Operation Barbarossa and follow the German invasion of Russia through to its ultimate failure. Or start later in the war and jump straight into the Russian counter push to Berlin. A massive 108 turn campaign will take you from the opening stages to a final, overwhelming Russian offensive. Four shorter Operations, spanning 16 turns each, take place from June to December of each year and offer a more condensed experience.

The bitter weather on the Eastern Front was as much a danger as the opposing forces, and the game reflects this with a seasonal cycle that has a profound effect on your tactics as you struggle to hold out through the vicious Winter until reinforcements arrive in Summer. Players must also deal with fog of war effects, and will be able to cut off their opponent's supply lines, while making sure their own stay secure.

A user-friendly hex-based game

This version of the Russian campaign in World War II is playable and user-friendly. Three types of units (corps-level infantry, armor, and mech infantry) battle over varied terrain. The map extends from Berlin in the west to Stalingrad in the east. Winter weather rules make attacking harder, though weather does not seem to have an impact on movement rates (where's the mud?!?). Supply lines are important. Rivers are shown on the map but do not have the same defense-bolstering combat effects that are seen in some other Russian front-type games. The scoring system is based on minimum points needed to avoid defeat, and a threshold needed to achieve victory. As long as you are in between the minimum and the victory threshold the game will continue, and the minimum and victory threshold values change over time. Scenario options include individual operations as well as a four-year campaign. The tactical challenge is to keep your units in supply while attempting to cut off the enemy's supply lines. Armor and mech are especially critical for cutting off enemy units, because these faster moving corps can move through zones of control. The AI is intelligent and mostly puts up a good fight (though AI controlled units in isolated pockets have a tendency to launch futile suicide attacks). The more grognard oriented players will miss an air strikes option, as well as more finely tuned weather effects and more visible and noticeable in-supply and out-of-supply consequences. But the game is built for simplicity and ease of play. People with very long memories may remember the 1960s AH board game "Stalingrad." This is a digital version. It's reasonably priced, so if this genre and battlefront interest you, give it a try.

Much less than advertised

No opportunity to save games on Mac OS. A random “score” system that doesn’t take into account where your armies are or how many units you have (the score changes without any explanation all the time). The Russian side campaign is super-easy, but the German campaign is impossible to win even at the easiest level. Typos in names of cities. The same units everywhere, no air support or naval units. Cities randomly chosen. Winter starts in September. You cannot move into cities that are undefended without any logic behind it. Overall, a disappointing experience. Not buying from this company ever again.
