Ratings and Reviews
An AWESOME Approach to Shakespeare
What We Liked:
Some purists may argue that one shouldn’t rely upon outside explanations to enjoy Shakespeare’s plays, but in truth – how many of us can read his work without a good dictionary containing archaic terms in it at our side? I wish I could have had a copy of Shakespeare in Bits: Macbeth on my iPad when I was in high school, of course that was many years before the iPad hit the educational scene.
Thankfully, Shakespeare in Bits does away with the need for external references – everything is contained right in the app, definitions available at a touch, visual, on-screen action, character sketches, theme development, places to take your own notes, it’s honestly amazing how much is included in this app.
At the risk of sounding clichéd – the future of Shakespeare has arrived! With this integrated multi-media resource Macbeth is now easier to understand than ever before. Comprehension levels and retention of the major points will exponentially increase with this multi-sensory approach to the play. The in-app audio, side-by-side animation, and touch-screen interactivity to pull up definitions (and more) will greatly help learners by bringing a wide range of learning modalities together.
Shakespeare in Bits: Macbeth is an incredibly well done example of the sorts of rich educational experiences that are available even for higher-level students with the use of touch-screen technology. I love to see new innovative apps like this that so greatly enrich the learning of traditional subjects.
What We Didn’t Like:
I found the app crashy on the iPad 2 with iOS 4.3.5 but updating to iOS 5.0.1 resolved this issue - no crashes now! The only suggestions I can really make is the addition of a search feature to the app so that specific passages can be easily jumped to if readers aren’t sure which act and scene they are found in and the ability to display subtitles in the full screen video mode.
With deeply educational resources such as Shakespeare in Bits: Macbeth available to high school students tackling the language of Shakespeare in the 21st century, studying the bard need not be incomprehensible. Indeed, I don’t believe Shakespeare’s original work has ever been more accessible, more easily deciphered and therefore, more enjoyable for modern readers.
