Description

SmartGo One is the only Go app you’ll need whether you’re just getting started with Go or are a seasoned master. Learn, play, and win with SmartGo One!

The ancient game of Go can be enjoyed on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac in a whole new way. Also known as igo (囲碁), wéiqí (围棋), or baduk (바둑), Go starts out with a blank game board that fills as you work to capture territory and stones from your opponent.

You can start with a board size of 9x9 and then move onto larger ones measuring 13x13 and 19x19 as your skills grow. SmartGo One increases its difficulty as players improve, with an automatically-adjusted handicap ensuring you’re never playing an opponent that’s beyond your capabilities. But don’t be fooled into thinking SmartGo will hold your hand — you’ll still be challenged! With a strong engine based on KataGo, expect a battle as your improving skills demand it.

SmartGo One gives Go fans a way to play, but it goes far beyond that. With SmartGo One you’ll also be able to read books about Go while replaying moves that those books describe to help you get a better understanding. A collection of more than 125,000 pro-level game records means you’ll never stop learning from masters both modern and much, much older. Players can also take advantage of a growing library of Go problems. Solving those problems is a great way to improve your in-game decision making.

Stuck or keen to learn how a master would play any position you find yourself in? SmartGo’s pattern matching technology will cross-reference your game board with those of historical games, showing you how other players dealt with the situation at hand. No matter your level of skill, SmartGo One will help you improve.

Great for books

Great for books. The interactive diagrams are really the killer feature. Without the interactive diagrams, if it's a diagram with more than 10 moves, you kind of need to use a board.

Sometimes it is better to use a board rather than clicking through an interactive diagram because it forces you to think about the moves so even when I reading books on SmartGo, I sometimes use a real board anyway. But it's really cool to have those diagrams.

For problems too, sometimes with the interactive diagrams, I fall into the pattern of clicking everywhere until I get it but I try not to. It's not the diagram's fault, it's my fault.

I also use it to record my games during tournaments. It has a really cool feature where you can move a stone long after it's been played. Noticing at move 100 that move 50 was misplaced used to be a hugh problem that could only be solved by going back to move 50, changing it, then replaying all the moves that came after. With this, you can be playing your game, notice a stone on the board that is not at the right place in the record and correct it during the game.

Near perfect!!!

I've been using Smart Go every day for years now. You get all the pro games as well as KataGo reviews. The UI is slick.

As of August 31 2024, and given that this app is quite expensive, a few improvements would be appreciated :

1. Win rates displayed on the board for each recommended move.
2. A tools pane that is always available (without having to clic on the three dots). Right now it's annoying to have to open the tools menu to switch between playing and markup.
3. A feed for daily go news, publications, links to match reviews on YouTube or Baduk TV, etc.
4. More randomness in Katago's moves to simulate playing against weaker players and practicing more diverse openings.
5. A real full screen mode, where you see only the board on a nice background (customizable and animated that would be nice!!)
6. The ability to hide the move track and the comments sections.
