You should pay for it, you get the iOS and Mac app for 40 a year, which is still good.If you are a student it’s even cheaper!The sync with apple devices is amazing.

We have added multiple highly-requested features in version 13 that make working with Ulysses more efficient than ever (e.g. daily goals, syntax highlighting in code blocks etc.). However, Ulysses still retains its distraction-free editor even with the introduction of new features. Also, if you have purchased Ulysses in the past, you can still benefit from the lifetime discount (25% off the yearly subscription price), since we have extended its use until 31 July 2018. The subscription model completely turned me off this app. It’s quite off putting to make it seem like your app is free and having users download it, only for them to find out that they can’t use the app without a subscription. And no, mentioning it in one sentence in the description box isn’t enough, at least make it obvious for users. Thanks, but no thanks!

We are sorry about the confusion! We opted for a free download so we can offer a fully-functional 14-day trial in the App Store and there is no other way to realize this. The trial ends automatically after 14 days and needs no cancellation, so you are not going to be billed. A list of available subscription options is listed right next to the app as in-app purchases. As for our move to subscription: We did not take this decision lightly. We had been thinking about moving to a subscription for a pretty long time and weighed all possible options. In the end, we reached the conclusion that a subscription is best way to move forward for Ulysses as a product (and therefore also our users) and also us as a company.
