The Co-Star app delves deep into the stars, churning out readings designed to help you understand your deeper nature and contextualize your life in a grand universe.
To start using it, you must first do something unexpected: Call your parents and ask them the exact time you were born. Then enter that information, along with the date and year, into Co-Star.
Using traditional astrology methods, combined with NASA data about planetary movements, the app produces a series of charts and readings that map your personality, your past, and your future. There are sections for your social life, information about your moon and sun signs, calendar-related predictions, and charts for every planet in our system.
These are not your average magazine back-page horoscopes. If you’ve been a dabbler up until now, you might not even know that your Pluto could be in Scorpio, in your fifth house (meaning you are transforming outdated definitions of romance) or that Mars could be in Taurus, making you rather secretive and introspective.
Opt in to daily push notifications and Co-Star will send you ambiguous messages about your day. “Vulnerability is potent,” you say? That one could leave you scratching your head—or adjusting your actions accordingly. “You will only see what you want to see today,” reads another. Is that empowering advice or a warning? Like much in the astrology world, the messages and meanings are up to you to take as you will.
Perhaps the most fun to be had in Co-Star is with the social aspect. Easily add friends, family, and lovers (current or potential) to assess your compatibility. Once you’ve linked with a buddy, the app will give you daily updates on your relationship, grading your compatibility on things as expansive as Basic Identities (how your star signs match) to more cerebral pairings like your Sense of Responsibility, Intellect & Communication, Love & Pleasure, and Philosophies of Life. Each pairing is assigned an analogue emoji—happy, neutral, or sad—and includes a succinct explanation.
Just as you can go deep into your own planetary signs, Co-Star will match and analyze yours against your friends’. Unofficial side effects of the app may be outbursts of “I told you so” and “This is why we’re perfect for each other.” Few things are more satisfying than having a star-sign-based prediction confirm what you already knew about a relationship.
The charts and maps are advanced stuff, so Co-Star provides short explanations for the predictions at the base of each one. Turns out everything you do today harkens back to the positions of the planets when you were born. So before you download, make sure you get that call in to your mom or dad. The rest is up to the stars.
