What we love: SoundHound is so smart it doesn’t even need to hear the original version of the song—simply hum or sing the tune yourself and the app will jump into action. It also has a voice-controlled hands-free mode: Fire it up by saying, “Hey Siri, launch SoundHound,” then discover new music by asking, “Hey SoundHound, what song is this?”
Quick tip: Once you’ve identified a song, you can listen to the entire thing on Apple Music, Spotify, or YouTube and bring up karaoke-style lyrics. Or search an artist’s name for trivia, top songs, and their current tour schedule.
Meet the creator: Founded in 2005, SoundHound specializes in speech recognition and natural language understanding, and sees voice AI as the future of human and computer interaction. Inspired by the then-nonexistent concept of voice AI in Star Trek, cofounder and CEO Keyvan Mohajer started the company when he was an electronics PhD student at Stanford.
