CELEBRATING WOMEN
Apps Made by Canadian Women
Lots of incredible apps have been made possible by Canadian women. Here’s a quick tour of just a few of them, with an introduction to the local talent who brought each one to life.
Joyster
Joyster is a mental and physical health tracker that can help you better understand your mind and body, and how they work together. You can then use that knowledge to identify trends and triggers, and to focus on the things that make you feel good.
Currently available on iPhone only.
Meet the creator: Made on Vancouver Island by Paula Barcante and Steve Viselli, Joyster was created after Barcante began to track her own anxiety and panic attacks on spreadsheets. Wanting to understand more, she would compare her daily anxiety, depression, and panic levels against her physical symptoms and related activities. Those graphs later became Joyster.
Clearful
This free digital journal gives you a safe and private space to explore your thoughts. Build a mind journaling habit with a beautifully calm writing canvas that can help bring you focus and clarity. Need a spark to ignite your creativity? Find guided topics and smart prompts to get your mind moving.
Meet the creator: Maria Golikova created Clearful with her cofounder and partner, Jeffrey Bunn. While developing a different app together, they found that journaling helped them navigate the challenges of building a company. They turned that experience into Clearful, which they continue to refine in Vancouver.
EyeLoveBirds
EyeLoveBirds is a complete bird-watching guide for Canada, the United States, and Europe. Identify over 2,000 bird species with scientific profiles and full resolution photos, and explore a library of over 3,000 bird sounds to pique your interest.
Currently available on iPhone only.
Meet the creator: Vancouverite Erynn Tomlinson is passionate about software design, user experience design, travel, and nature. She hopes EyeLoveBirds, which she founded as a passion project, will bring a love for birding, nature, and conservation to the younger generation.
#SelfCare
Sometimes we need to take a step back to catch our breath, relax, and perhaps even spend the day in bed. That’s the premise of #SelfCare, an experience that’s not about winning or getting a high score, but taking care of yourself. It’s set entirely in a cozy bedroom, is rooted in insightful actions, and the only battle is against your own stress.
Currently available on iPhone only.
Meet the creator: Brie Code is the founder and CEO of TRU LUV, and is an emotion AI expert with 20 years of experience in the interactive space. Following her own experiences with trauma and post-traumatic growth, she focused on launching #SelfCare based on the techniques that she found worked for her. Headquartered in Toronto, Code and her team are defining a growing category of interactive products.
