Nowhere in the history books will you find Julius Caesar, Joan of Arc, and Sun Tzu fighting side by side. But in Rise of Kingdoms, even this unlikeliest of trios is possible.
In this sprawling but accessible strategy game, begin by choosing a civilization to model your empire after—maybe Rome, France, or China. Starting with a modest walled town as your base, explore a kingdom full of valuable resources to gather, find vicious barbarians to fight, and head to other players’ settlements to…well, that’s up to you.
Are you a warmonger who wants to rain fire upon your foes? A pacifist who wants to design your town for maximum beauty and efficiency? A team player who’s eager to be part of a powerful alliance, pooling resources and watching your friends’ backs? The choice is yours.
As your city grows, so does your army. Recruiting legendary commanders (like Julius, Joan, and Sun) will give your warriors an extra edge in battle. Researching technologies helps propel your empire through the ages, unlocking awesome new structures to build and powerful military units to command.
Rise of Kingdoms is amazingly versatile. Spend five minutes on a quick expedition to get a bit of loot, or five hours coordinating with friends to launch a massive invasion. As entertaining as the solo experience can be, joining an alliance opens up new strategies and objectives—plus jaw-dropping treasures.
Despite its grand size and scope, the game gently guides you along your journey to greatness. It’s never too hand-holdy, and you’re never confused about what to do next. Raising a great civilization takes time, but turns out it’s a whole lot of fun.
