Some games are all about realism. And others are all about riding dinosaurs all over the place while blowing things up with heavy weapons. ARK: Survival Evolved is the latter kind of game.

You start the game on an island packed with ferocious beasts, and you only have your fists to protect you. To survive you’ll need to find food and shelter, and to thrive you’ll need to find ways to kill or tame the many monsters that roam the island.

You can’t just run around punching dodos, although we did quite a lot of that to begin with: you need to evolve so you can face creatures such as the aptly named Gigantosaurus.

As you become stronger and more powerful, so does the available weaponry: you may only have fingers to begin with but by the end you’ll be blasting things with bazookas while riding a raptor.

It looks amazing, you can have a lot of fun with the character creator and the island world is massive. You can play solo or in multiplayer mode, and the mix of combat and crafting is very satisfying.

The campaign mode has some great boss battles and some very memorable monsters but the real fun is online, where you can team up with other players – assuming that you can trust them not to betray you.
