I’m going to focus on personal data here. This application is for blood donors — a quite sensitive area and I’d argue an area requiring special considerations when it comes to data processing even if you don’t fall under any special legal regime.

First, I don’t understand why I have to sign up for yet another account just to use the app. Half the problems would be gone if you allow people to use on-device storage only and never transfer any personal data to any service over the Internet. Phones have backups nowadays. The app can also allow users to export and import data from a file. If you want to offer sync, start with iCloud or at least Sign in with Apple. People trust them…

Second, this app’s privacy policy is practically illegal. The stated purpose of data processing is not to, for example, maintain specifically listed types of data about user’s blood donation to allow the user to switch devices or use multiple devices at the same time and sync the app state across these devices. No, the stated purpose is: “[…] to plan marketing campaigns using statistical data from users […]”. What the #&$%? That’s it, really. I just left out typical legalese. Apparently, the developer completely forgot they have an app to help blood donors, not a marketing platform.

If the developer doesn’t understand their legal obligations when processing personal data, they should find help. This is a good idea, lots of people would surely help them for free. Even if they wanted to keep this marketing purpose in there after adding the obvious purpose of the app, they would need an extra consent by the user to process data for marketing purpose. And they would have to be more specific than that they’re using statistics. Mainly whether the data is anonymized. But I would personally love much more information.

Next, app’s privacy labels here on App Store can’t possibly be correct. That’s precisely because of what privacy policy states, and because users have to sign in before using the app.

Lastly, and this has less to do with personal data and more with general care the developer puts into the app. The support link on app’s App Store page leads to completely unrelated web site.

How can I trust this app and its developer? I cannot. They’re sloppy, they bother me with registration, they don’t explain what for, yet they ask for my personal data. It’s a shame, because the system in the Czech Republic is regularly falling short and an app like that might help. Just not this one.
