Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.

Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.

Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.

Proton Mail in the press:
“Proton Mail is a Gmail-like email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes

“A new email service being developed by a group who met at MIT and CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

Best mail service for privacy

It didn’t take long for me to switch to protonmail as my main email provider after trying it out. The web ui is much friendlier to me than that of other providers. You keep getting new and constantly updating services with your subrscription. Emails send and receive well, spam protection is excellent, especially if you use the simplelogin extension (which is included for free with certain subscriptions, it is the first link when you look up “proton simplelogin). You never have to give sites you don’t trust your real email and only generate aliases that can be disabled anytime.

Only issue I am aware of is with notifications. iOS notifications stay even after you read or delete the email in question on other devices. Just a small annoyance that will likely get fixed sometime soon.

Developer Response ,

Hi! Thank you for your honest review. Our developers are aware of the issue you've mentioned and are working on implementing a fix. However, we do not have an ETA at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience this might have caused you.

Blocking in Russia is a sign of quality!

I don’t know much... But I know for sure that if something is blocked in Russia (in the period of Putin’s stagnation), it’s definitely a good and reliable service! Service management - you are well done!
P.S. Its domains and IP addresses were added to the register of prohibited sites in 2020.

Issues and bugs for a long time. No notification from the app

Love the app but it crashes very often when I open an email for notification bar. I have cleared the cache, uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it still freezes. Update Dec22: still crashing even after update. Problems occur at least 30% of the time. I put 1 star, it's been ongoing for a while. Update May23: no more crashes but if I switch off my phone and activate the flight mode, I don't get notifications when I turn it back on. I have to open the app to see if I have emails. Reply to developers: I edited my review because indeed it was confusing. Issue is that I don't get notifications when I turn on the phone or when I deactivate flight mode. I have to reopen the app manually to see if I have emails.
Update Oct22. I just realized that I missed an important email that I received 2 ago without notification from the app. I like what Proton is doing but I have experienced significant issues with this app for almost a year now. I've switched to Tutanota.

Developer Response ,

We're sorry to hear about the trouble! Can you please follow these steps in order to make sure that the push notifications are enabled for your Proton Mail application:

– Make sure push notifications are allowed for ProtonMail on your iOS device. Open your iOS settings → locate the Proton Mail app → and ensure the “Allow Notifications” option is enabled.
– Close and restart the iOS application.
– Log out and log in again to the iOS application.

If notifications are allowed and you are still not receiving push notifications, please re-install the Proton Mail application. Turning your device off and on again might also help.

Contact us through the "Report a problem" feature if the issue persists.
