Our latest feature explores a late-16th century portrait of Elizabeth I, known as the “Coronation Portrait,” from London’s National Portrait Gallery. This fascinating, highly symbolic oil painting, likely made at the end of the Tudor queen’s life, reveals a great deal about the pomp and circumstance of her lengthy reign, as well as how portraiture served strategically as a way for the sovereign to shape her image, assert power, and maintain the loyalty of her subjects.
