Have you (or maybe one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear?
It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others.
Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it?
Imagine you could understand music... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning.
One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones.
The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale.
And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter:
- who you are - an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician;
- how old you are - a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult;
- what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one).
The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day.
I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed a mobile app based on the Alain Benbassat method. I hope you will find it useful.

Sehr flexible, aber trotzdem einfach zu bedienende App mit spezifischem Fokus
Inzwischen trainiere ich schon seit mehreren Monaten mein Gehör mit dieser App und ich mag sie immer noch sehr gern!
Mir geht es im wesentlichen darum, mich bei der Jazz-Improvisation zu verbessern. Dabei hilft es mir enorm, Töne, die ich im Kopf höre, im harmonischen Kontext zu erkennen und somit auch auf dem Instrument umsetzen zu können.
Besonders gut gefällt mir die Möglichkeit, eigene Levels zu erstellen, z.B. diatonische Modi wie Lydisch oder Lokrisch und Auflösung und Kadenz einfach wegzulassen bzw. Letztere durch den Grundton zu ersetzen (sonst passen Kadenz und Auflösung nicht zum Modus).
Außerdem ist der Klavierton besser als bei einer anderen Gehörbildungs-App, die ich ausführlicher ausprobiert hatte. Dadurch fällt es mir leichter, bei Akkorden die einzelnen Töne zu hören (anstelle eines schrillen Tonbreis).
Natürlich gibt es noch weitere Aspekte von Gehörbildung, die hier nicht adressiert sind, daher ist die App nicht die allein seeligmachende Wahrheit. Aber sie versucht das auch nicht vorzugaukeln. Und für mich ist die App genau zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt genau richtig.
Fast perfekt
Nur beim Vertiefen-Modus würde ich mir wünschen, dass man die Antwort auch per Klaviatur eingeben könnte und, dass man wieder kurze, zufällige Tonsequenzen abspielen könnte (war in früherer Version möglich), sodass man auch geübter darin wird, kurze Melodieteile nach Gehör spielen zu können. Das ist allerdings schon Meckern auf hohem Niveau.. und in Anbetracht dessen, dass die App umsonst ist, kriegt man hier eine saubere, simpel aufgebaute App mit Tiefgang und motivierendem Spielfaktor, mit der man auch unterwegs und zwischendurch sein Gehör schulen kann! Von daher vielen Dank an den/die EntwicklerIn für diese tolle App!
Super, ich bin echt begeistert
Dranbleiben, dann kommen die Erfolge. Tolles Konzept. Danke für dieses kostenlose Juwel. Anhand der Statistik für jedes Level lassen sich die Fehler differenziert analysieren. Die Einstellungsmöglichkeiten für Fortgeschrittene sind überragend, z.B. mehrere Töne hintereinander oder gleichzeitig. Bei den eigenen Übungen (custom levels) gibt es erweiterte Einstellungen (advanced settings), mit denen sich die Kadenz, und wann diese vorgespielt wird, auswählen lässt. Ihr merkt, ich bin wirklich begeistert.
