Maptrails is a modern map browser that packs an amazing experience for hiking, hunting, orienteering, or just enjoying your time outdoors. Only Maptrails offers full featured apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac.

The app comes preconfigured with a large selection of built-in maps in topographic, nautical, and aerial imagery styles. Save places as map markers that sync between your devices over iCloud. It is easy and fun to measure distances and draw paths on the map, or use Look Around to see street level imagery at any address.

Maptrails Pro one-time purchase unlocks a professional grade feature set. Add your own maps and data layers from standard APIs, and bring in GPX, GeoJSON or Shapefile data. You can even draw notes directly on the map using touch or pencil!

Maptrails makes it easy to plan your upcoming hike by letting you download map tiles for offline use, view up-to-date weather forecasts, or draw tracks on the map and save them to GPX files. After your hike, graph out its speed and altitude data.

For hunters, integration with Oma Riista lets you import hunting areas using area code. Share your location with a private group of other Maptrails users.

Build your own dog tracker by installing separate Beacon app to another device and pairing it with Maptrails. Its position can then be tracked on the map in Maptrails.

My favorite map-app on ipad and Mac

I use Kartasto to visualize trips I have undertaken over the years.

I put markers in places that I have listed in my travel diaries, provide them with icons (e.g. for overnight stays) and copy sentences from my diaries into the notes that can be added to each marker. You can also add photos to the markers - another great feature.

In the app you can also visualize routes that automatically follow the roads on the map. The markers can be summarized conveniently in folders - i use one for each trip - so even if you manage the trips of several decades your map will never become cluttered. Since the last update, the developer implemented folders also for tracks.

Although Kartasto is actually an ios app, it runs robustly and reliable on the Mac, and everything synchronizes within seconds seamlessly via the icloud. For example, you can record a track live on the ipad and work with it at home on the big screen of the imac.

The developer is very attentive and open for feature requests. Since i first wrote this review, he has implemented two suggestions of mine - the ability to move markers without having to delete them and an indication whether a marker has nots attached to it.

Best mobile mapping App!

It combines the official topographic maps of numerous countries with OSM-Layers with useful features like map downloading, great work! Even better than my favourite outdoor-active! But I got several questions: this far there is no italian or slovenian map and the french and german maps do not show. Why is that? And apart of that, is it possible to synchronize the downloaded map tiles over several devices? Thanks for your efforts!
