Beschreibung

Monoleap is a new musical instrument for the iPAD, capable of playing monophonic sounds with rich expression.

Monoleap lets you play anywhere on the screen using custom fingering patterns, while controlling the instrument expression using vertical and horizontal hand movements. It comes with a built in sound, but is designed to be used as a MIDI controller for playing your favorite software or hardware instruments.

Martha Proton ,

Immerse yourself in your own music with closed eyes!

To my knowledge, Monoleap is the only expressive midi controller/instrument app for the ipad that makes playing music with closed eyes possible.

A range-optimised, repetitive flute-style fingering with a logical and easy to memorise combination of eight fingers is used to define the notes (monophonic, as the app name implies).

And - brilliant for playing synth/fx apps that allow some midi cc mapping - every hand can also control two midi CCs, one on the x, one on the y axis (so four in total, meaning two more than a kaoss pad, for example).
This turns the ipad into a serious musical live instrument full of expressive possibilities, even without using an external controller.
Absolutely brilliant!

The only caveat is some latency, possibly due to the multitouch recognition and my four year old base model ipad, so I personally won‘t use it for playing staccato sounds in a live context with other sound sources. But for the more legato sounds making use of modulation, Monoleap is a dream come true, competing with hardware controllers more expensive than most ipads.

Hi Martha,
Thanks a lot for your lovely and in depth review! I'm so glad that you like Monoleap and find it useful :)
As for the latency, it is indeed due to the multitouch pattern recognition. I'm adding an option to configure the sensitivity in an upcoming version (a few fixed settings probably for now). Of course, setting the sensitivity to higher might increase the chance of mistaken notes, but I'll try to find the right numbers to allow also playing staccato notes with shorter delays.
Thanks again 🌸
