Payment sometimes not possible

While the App is very useful, it is sometimes not possible to top up money (with Apple Pay). This means, it works on one day and does not work on another day without any apparent reason. This is very daunting 😵‍💫

Not yet useful

I was very excited when I learned that there would be a mobile version of the octopus card, which I regularly use for business trips.
But my excitement went quickly:
1) I could not get a mobile octopus card as the app would not accept Apple Pay, resp. the credit card behind. Another payment option was not available to me.
2) you can not choose „HKD“ as currency to use for top-ups. You have to choose GBP, USD, EUR, etc and this leads inevitably to higher banking fees . Not good

Scammy exchange rate

The tourist-version of the octopus app only allows topping up in foreign currencies. The exchange rate is about 5~6% worse than market rates. If you have a credit card that doesn’t charge for use abroad, this rate is very unattractive. This is completely unacceptable and not what you would expect from a place like Hong Kong.
