iPhone can be used as a radiation detector, as it is called Geiger counter, by connecting the voice output of the Pocket Geiger Counter with the microphone input.

Sensor: PIN photo diode x8 (reverse biased and shielded)
Detectable radiations: Beta and Gamma radiation
Measurement range: 0.05uSv/h~10mSv/h (Calibrated using Cs-137), 0.01cpm~300000cpm
Measuring time: about 5 minutes at the dose rate of 0.05uSv/h
Energy response: :662keV~1333keV

Great DIY Geiger Counter that actually works!

I bought the detector basically to support the people in Japan helping them build a cheap measurement device for the masses. I got my detector some weeks ago.

On my iPhone 3GS when plugged in it just works as expected though I need to handle it with care (small movements at the cable and collisions of the detector with other things will create NOISE in the signal). It would be great if the project was releasing the source code for the decoding of the audiosignal, so we could build other great apps around this detector.

On my iPod it just will display radioactivity depending on how loud I am speaking to someone. Wrong Audio-Route? The iPod Touch (4th gen) has an internal Mic this might be just the wrong Mic which was chosen for input on that device... just a wild guess. I would like to help the project getting this app ported to german language also writing a short tutorial how to use it. Where can I contact the right person?
